A section of United Democratic Alliance party (UDA) leadership in Kitui County has declared that there shall be no boardroom agreements on occupants of various positions in the party’s forthcoming elections but it will be a prerogative of delegates to elect leaders.

The group under the leadership of Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai has instead insisted that whoever is interested in the party’s leadership must subject themselves before the party members for an election.

Two camps have emerged in Kitui County, one gravitating towards EAC and ASAL cabinet secretary Peninah Malonza, and another one led by Mr Mbai.

In a meeting at Kitui town, Mr Mbai’s team was re-energized after Kitui Rural MP Rachael Nyamai and former Kitui Gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Mueke, who is now Agriculture PS, folded their camps in support of Nimrod Mbai.

In a joint statement read by Zombe/Mwitika MCA Laban Malinga, the three camps will now work together and deliver a win for grassroots elections.

“We want to state categorically that there shall be no boardroom agreements whatsoever,” said Malinga. “Anybody who is interested in party leadership must seek mandate from the electorates.”

In what appears to be a big blow to Ms Malonza, both Ps Mueke and Ms Nyamai camps declared their unequivocal support for Mr Mbai, who is eyeing for the County Chairmanship position.

Nimrod Mbai vowed to deliver majority of the seats to UDA in the 2027 general elections.

“So far, Mbai is the only MP elected under UDA in Kitui County,” he said.

Mbai said that UDA would identify candidates early and prepare them for the 2027 elections to guarantee a win.

In the meeting, leaders who defected from other parties to UDA were present.

These included Hon Augustine Kasolo from Wiper party (Kitui Rural), Hon Emmah Kitemange from Maendeleo Chap Chap (former Kitui County MP candidate), and former Zombe/Mwitika ward MCA Mwathi Katheke from Jubilee party.
