A dramatic scene unfolded within Parliament buildings on Tuesday afternoon when two female legislators found themselves at the centre of a heated and physical confrontation.
In a Video that has since gone viral on Social Media, ODM nominated MP UmulKher Harun and EALA MP Falhada Iman were filmed engaging in a fight.
The footage, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the two lawmakers in a heated exchange that quickly escalated into a scuffle, prompting other female MPs and Parliament security to intervene.
The Sergeant-at-Arms eventually managed to separate the two, though the pair continued to hurl insults at each other even after being restrained.
In a statement on social media after the altercation, MP Umul Kheir expressed regret over the confrontation, terming it “unfortunate.”
She claimed the EALA legislator has consistently opposed her work and accused her of launching an unprovoked attack.
“My colleague from the EALA, who has expressed longstanding differences with my work, acted in a manner that I find unacceptable. She came to Parliament to do nothing but attack me, an incident that blindsided me and left me questioning what faulted the ambush,” Umulkher stated.
Speaking to KBC Channel 1 by phone, the EALA MP offered a different account, alleging that her counterpart accused her of insulting her father, which triggered the altercation.
Both Legislators have since confirmed that they have reported the matter to the parliament police station, with authorities in receipt of both their statements.
The two have since noted that they have regretted the incident.
The 1-minute video, which has since gone viral online, has drawn condemnation from the Kenya Women Senators Association.
All eyes are on the National Assembly this afternoon to see if the Speaker Moses Wetangula will address the matter.
