Gathimba stamps authority to win 2nd AK/Betika track and field weekend meet

2022 race walk African champion Samuel Gathimba Ireri and Sylvia Kemboi are the winners of the 10km race walk at the 2nd Athletics Kenya Betika track and field weekend meet, which started today at the Thika Municipal Stadium.

Gathimba from Central emerged victorious in 41 minutes 44.7 seconds, ahead of former World under-20 champion Heringstone Wanyonyi from Kenya Police in 42 minutes 40.6 seconds and KDF’s Stephen Ndangiri, who finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Kemboi from Central won the women’s race in 49 minutes 56.7 seconds, followed by Nairobi’s Mercyline Nakhumicha and Naum Jepkirui from KDF in 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.

Celestine Jepkosgei from KDF won the women’s 3000 m steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 10 minutes 16.3 seconds ahead of her compatriot Dorothy Jepkoech Kimutai in 11.00.04 minutes, followed by Ann Gathoni of Police in 11.02.2 minutes in 2nd and 3rd positions in that order.

The 2nd weekend meet will culminate tomorrow.
