Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi stormed to his 2nd 800m Diamond League win this season at Stockholm, Sweeden, on Sunday evening as reigning World Champion Mary Moraa finished 2nd with a Seasonal Best time.
Wanyonyi who is now on course to defend his diamond trophy,set a world-leading time of 1:41.95, becoming the 1st man to dip under 1:42 this year, his fastest time since the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati finished 2nd in 1:42.27, while American Josh Hoey, completed the top 3 in a time of 1:42.43.
Commonwealth champion Wycliff Kinyamal of Kenya finished a distant 7th.
Wanyonyi said, “My body did not feel great, but I kept pushing. I have a lot of mileage in my legs and need to start speedwork to improve my finish. I was very happy to run under 1:42, especially so soon after winning in Oslo. I will aim to make the final at the World Champs, and then we will see what happens.”
Reigning world champion Mary Moraa, managed a 2nd position finish in 800m, with a PB of 1:57.83, behind George Hunter of Britain, who won the race in 1:57.66.
South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso completed the podium positions.
Buoyed by home support Mondo Duplantis shattered his 11th world record, soaring to a new pole vault world record of 6.28 m.
The 8th meet will be held on 20th June in Paris,France.
