IFPI showcases Sub-Saharan Africa’s music growth at Inaugural France Music Week Summit

Angela Ndambuki, Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), highlighted the remarkable growth of the music industry in Sub-Saharan Africa, with South Africa and Nigeria emerging as major powerhouses.

She also emphasized the dynamic potential of fast-growing markets such as Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.

Speaking at the inaugural France Music Week Summit at the iconic Palais Garnier – Opéra National de Paris, Angela noted that, “Sub-Saharan Africa is not just rising it’s evolving. We’re seeing tremendous innovation in how music is discovered, distributed, and consumed, particularly through mobile platforms. Young, tech-savvy audiences are shaping trends, and to truly engage with them, global players must invest in building meaningful relationships with local partners. Collaboration and cultural understanding are essential.”

The summit, themed “Different Markets, Different Moves: Adapting Strategies for Growth”, brought together key global leaders in the music industry to exchange insights on regional trends and strategic approaches to growth.

Angela joined IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley (née Dean) and Marie-Anne Robert, Managing Director of Sony Music France, in a high-level panel discussing the evolution of music markets worldwide.

Speaking at the event French President Emmanuel Macron said his government had decided to create thee music week so as to celebrate the diversity of cultures around the world.

He added that France will support the music scene through finance so that it can get to the same level as cinema.

“We decided to launch the music week with the intention o showcasing the dynamism of the music business around the world,” he said.

Angela shared insights on the importance of data, mobile-led distribution models, and authentic local engagement strategies, drawing attention to the region’s vibrant youth demographic and their influence on music consumption patterns.

The event was attended by among others Warner music group Chief Executive Officer Robert Kyncl.

In addition to the summit, Angela joined global music executives in attending Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter concert, noting the exceptional production quality and a surprise performance by Miley Cyrus.
