The Vihiga Affordable Housing Project situated in Majengo area is almost complete, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced.

In a statement on Monday, PS Omollo said the project which was launched in September 2023 is 88 per cent complete and is set to redefine the landscape of Majengo.

According to Omollo, finishing works are in full gear, ranging from the casting of the retaining wall and civil installations, to electrical wiring, plumbing, mechanical fittings, painting and the welding of doors and windows.

Excavation of the septic tank is also ongoing, ensuring the project meets both functional and environmental standards.

The project features nine blocks housing a total of 220 modern units: one bedsitter block with 60 units; one block of 20 one-bedroom units; five blocks offering 100 two-bedroom units; and two blocks with 40 spacious three-bedroom units.

“With 220 workers, most of them local youth and women, the project is a powerful engine for employment, skills development and economic empowerment. Young people are gaining hands-on training in construction, electrical work, welding and finishing, equipping them with trades that extend far beyond the project site,” said PS Omollo.

Once complete, the project will stimulate economic activity, decongest informal settlements and enhance urban order in Vihiga Constituency, in line with the housing program outlined in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
